Antileishmanial activity of a mixture of Tridax procumbens and Allium sativum in mice

چکیده
We tested a mixture of Tridax procumbens, known for its direct action against Leishmania mexicana, and Allium sativum, known for its immunomodulatory effect, as an alternative to treat cutaneous leishmaniasis. Acute oral toxicity was tested with the Up-and-Down Procedure (UDP) using a group of healthy mice administered with either T. procumbens or A. sativum extracts and compared with a control group. Liver injury and other parameters of toxicity were determined in mice at day 14. The in vivo assay was performed with mice infected with L. mexicana promastigotes and treated with either a mixture of T. procumbens and A. sativum or each extract separately. The thickness of the mice's footpads was measured weekly. After the 12-week period of infection, blood samples were obtained by cardiac puncture to determine the total IgG, IgG1 and IgG2a immunoglobulins by a noncommercial indirect ELISA. We showed that the mixture of T. procumbens and A. sativum extracts was better at controlling L. mexicana infection while not being toxic when tested in the acute oral toxicity assay in mice. An increase in the ratio of IgG2a/IgG1 indicated a tendency to raise a Th1-type immune response in mice treated with the mixture. The mixture of T. procumbens and A. sativum extracts is a promising natural treatment for cutaneous leishmaniasis and its healing effects make it a good candidate for a possible new phytomedicine.

Evaluation of Wound Healing Potential of Topical Formulation of Leaf Juice of Tridax Procumbens L. in Mice
Tridax procumbens L. (Compositae) is a common weed that grows in the rice fields of India. Traditionally the juice from leaves of Tridax procumbens has been used for healing dermal wound. However, in experimental studies, equivocal pro and anti-healing action of T. procumbens has been demonstrated. The present study evaluates the effect of topical ointment formulation of the leaf juice of T. pr...

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES Several plant products have been tested and found to possess antileishmanial activity. The present study was undertaken to establish whether methanolic extract of Allium sativum Linn has antileishmanial activity in comparison to standard drugs. METHODS Methanolic extract of A. sativum bulbs was screened for in vitro and in vivo antileishmanial activity against Leishman...

The therapeutic potential of crude extracts of aerial parts (stem, leaves and flowers) of Tridax procumbens was screened for in vitro antioxidant potential and alpha amylase inhibitory action. The crude hydro-methanolic, aqueous and petroleum ether extracts were obtained by percolation-maceration method using 50% methanol, double distilled water and petroleum ether as solvents. Phytochemical sc...
متن کاملAntihypoxic Activities of Allium sativum Flower in Mice
Background and purpose: Imbalance between low oxygen supply and oxygen demands determines organ hypoxia causing oxidative stress and finally lead to cell death. Compounds with antioxidant activity are able to exhibit antihypoxic property. Allium sativum has distinctive antioxidant activities, but to the best of our knowledge, there is no reports on the protective effect of flower of this plant ...
